A comedy festival welcomed international students to Kuopio

To dazzle the new international students arriving to Kuopio, something exceptional was organized as a welcoming event. This autumn, Kuopio region together with partners invited international students arriving to Kuopio for a Stand up night at Kuopio Campus.

International Stand up Night took place on September 13th. An audience of more than 500 people saw the performance of talented Scandinavian comedians, handpicked by Kuopio Comedy Festival, including:

André Wickström (FIN)

Tv and comedy star in Finland and Sweden.

Ari Eldjarn (ISL)

Iceland’s biggest comedy star.

Al Pitcher (SWE)

Free Wheeling genius – Sydney Morning Herald.

In 2010, Al Pitcher moved to Sweden and has quickly made a name for himself in the Swedish stand up scene. In 2011 he won ”Best male comedian” at Svenska Stand up galan.

International stand up night was part of the Welcome to Kuopio event, taking place all evening along. At first the international students were invited to visit the city hall of Kuopio. At the city hall they had a chance to see the ball room and hear short speeches by representatives of their educational institutions. On behalf of the city of Kuopio, chairman of the city board Antti Kivelä welcomed everyone to Kuopio, saying also that he hopes many of them to stay.

All international students were also invited to join #fromKuopiowithlove photo competition, a popular social media challenge arranged for international students for three years now. (All pictures posted on Instagram between 13th September and 31st October 2018 with the hashtag #fromKuopiowithlove will participate in the competition to win free tickets to Kuopio concert hall.)
